Farm Visits and Other Consultations

Small Acreage Management Agent

Simple questions can often be handled over the telephone. However, if basic knowledge is needed or conditions on the ground must be evaluated, then a visit to your property will be needed. A farm visit is especially important if weeds must be identified or the condition of the environment or productive base must be assessed.

There will be a charge for this visit to help supplement extension funding. In the past charges were rarely made for farm visits because budgets were much stronger and travel expenses generally much lower. In the Tri-River Area there are greater distances to cover and this adds to the drain on our travel budget.

Beginning in January 2006, the Small Acreage Program will be charging $25 for any farm or home visit. On average, this may only defray 50% to 75% of the travel costs associated with the visit.

To discuss questions or setup a farm visit, you should call Ed Page at 249-3935, in Montrose. Visits will be scheduled to fit your calendar (to the greatest extent possible) and address the problem in as timely a manner as possible. If the nature of the situation requires one or more follow-up visits, the same charge will be applicable for each visit.

At the current time laboratory fees, if they are applicable, are paid directly by you, the client. There is no additional charge made by extension if and when we arrange for these services. Soil samples, representing the most common and highly recommended labs tests, are usually done by the landowner with the advice and direction of an agent. You can get the instructions, materials, and tools you will need to do this job effectively from your loca
