Jeff Tranel began his Extension career in Nebraska working with farm and ranch families during the “Farm Crisis” of the 1980's. He then moved to Colorado to serve as Fieldman with the Southeast Farm Business Association - a farm management outreach effort of Colorado State University. In 1994, Jeff became the Agricultural and Business Management Economist with a joint appointment with Extension and the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.
Jeff has very strong working relationships with County Extension educators and colleagues in Colorado and across the U.S. He collaborates with these people to determine clientele needs and then develop, conduct, and evaluate educational materials and programs. His professional interests include financial management, risk management, income taxes, accounting, organizational structure, water, human resource management, and legislation affecting production agriculture. He has worked one-on-one with more than 1,100 farmers and ranchers since he began his Extension career in 1986.
Mr. Tranel was raised on a large commercial and purebred cattle ranch in south central Wyoming and northwestern Colorado. He became a certified artificial insemination technician at age 17, and has exhibited cattle and horses at county, state, and national livestock shows. Jeff was a member of the University of Wyoming livestock judging team and of 4-H and FFA livestock and dairy judging teams in county, state, and national competitions. He served a beef superintendent at the Colorado State Fair from 1995 through 2002.
"Jeff Tranel has contributed enormously to Colorado State University Extension through his many years of service with the organization. Starting with his time with the Farm Management Association and continuing today, Jeff shows enormous enthusiasm and dedication towards providing quality and timely Extension programs to the people of Colorado. Jeff continues to be successful in leveraging Colorado monies with funds from the USDA Risk Management Agency, and Western Center for Risk Management Education, among others." (John Deering)
